چکیده

In this paper the notion of collective intention in teams of agents involved in cooperative problem solving (CPS) in multiagent systems (MAS) is investigated. Starting from individual intentions , goals, and beliefs defining agents' local asocial motivational and informational attitudes, we arrive at an understanding of a collective intention in a team of agents. The presented definitions are rather strong, in particular a collective intention implies that all members intend for all others to share that intention. Based on this, we assume that a team of agents is created on the basis of a collective intention, and exists as long as this attitude between team members exists, after which the group may disintegrate. For this reason it is crucial that a collective intention within a group lasts long enough. Collective intentions are formalized in a multi-modal logical framework. Completeness of this logic with respect to an appropriate class of Kripke models is proved. Within the presented approach, two versions of collective intentions are discussed in the context of different situations. However it is assumed that these definitions reflect only vital aspects of motivational attitudes, leaving room for case-specific extensions. This makes the framework flexible and not overloaded. Together with individual and collective knowledge and belief, a collective intention constitutes a basis for preparing a plan, reflected in the strongest collective motivational attitude, i.e., in collective commitment, defined and investigated in our other papers.

There are many kinds of collective and joint activities, as we all know. We can jointly write a paper, carry a table, sing a duet, and perform a toast to somebody. We can collectively conserve energy, vote in elections, love or fear supernatural beings, follow norms, create and uphold social institutions. Furthermore, crowds and organized groups can behave in meaningful ways e.g. a crowd can tr...

Collective Intentions and Team Agency

In the literature of collective intentions, the ‘we-intentions’ that lie behind cooperative actions are analysed in terms of individual mental states. The core forms of these analyses imply that all Nash equilibrium behaviour is the result of collective intentions, even though not all Nash equilibria are cooperative actions. Unsatisfactorily, the latter cases have to be excluded either by stipu...

Collective Intentionality in Organizations: a Meta-ethnography of Identity and Strategizing

Sociologists often treat groups and organizations as if they had collective intentionality – that is, a collective impetus for action that exists semiindependently of the members of the group. At present, however, we lack a sound understanding of how collective intentionality is achieved or maintained. Furthermore, although organizations provide a well-defined and distinctive setting for an emp...

Collective nostalgia: A group-level emotion that confers unique benefits on the group.

This research established collective nostalgia as a group-level emotion and ascertained the benefits it confers on the group. In Study 1, participants who reflected on a nostalgic event they had experienced together with ingroup members (collective nostalgia) evaluated the ingroup more positively and reported stronger intentions to approach (and not avoid) ingroup members than those who recalle...

On Non Mediated Collective Intentions

The aim of this contribution is to introduce the notion of non mediated collective intentions and to stress its importance in the current cross-disciplinary debate on collective intentionality. Intuitively, this kind of intentions are held by individual agents when they are involved in collective actions on which their attention is not currently focused, although nothing prevents that the focus...
